City Public Services, the publicly owned utility company in San Antonio is very particular about the quality of water that runs off each of their power substation properties. Very large transformers are cooled by oil and water and oil do not mix well. So in fact the do not let water run off their substations, they collect it instead. Wow, how do they do that?

Well, the solution is to have large underground bunkers that catch the runoff during a rain. This captured, contaminated runoff is then pumped into a transport truck and delivered to a waste treatment plant for decontamination.

Utility Precast is very proud of being selected as the contractor of 3 large underground concrete precast bunkers to catch water runoff from a San Antonio electrical sub-station.

San Antonio is a very progressive city as far as Utility Precast is concerned. All their construction projects automatically specify Pre-Cast Cement Products where Pre-Cast construction is applicable.

We don’t know the exact reasons for this, but we are sure that some or all of the following benefits are significant to City Public Services.

Great Reasons to Use Utility Precast Concrete Methodology

  • Less time and effort spent in inspection of the process.
  • Safer working conditions for work crews.
  • Less excavation is required because close tolerances work. You need no room to build a form.
  • Better verification processes to insure quality construction.
  • Less time spent overseeing the project.
  • Less traffic congestion and dislocation around the work-site.
  • Less risk due to weather problems as a result of a shorter construction period.
  • Less time spent in the construction process and therefore less risk relating to an open and vulnerable construction site.
  • Fewer construction processes and fewer points of responsibility in the construction process.
  • More flexibility to deal with errors. We have lifted manhole sections out of the ground to allow for corrections in elevation by the excavation contractor. It might have taken a couple hours to correct the problem. Hmm, adjusting a pour-in-place form would have been….. start over from scratch.

Whatever their reasons, we agree they are good ones.

The Installation of 3 Large Bunkers Took Place in One Day

3 large underground concrete bunkers were carefully constructed off-site. The excavation contractor came in one day and dug three large holes and the next day several large lowboys delivered the sections of 3 bunkers to the work site.

At the end of the day, all 3 bunkers were ensconced in the ground and the site was backfilled. We leave it for you to figure how many days on site were saved from using conventional pour-in-place methodology.
